The British group said conditions had been tough in their markets of educational publishing, financial advertising and consumer books – but added that these had begun to ease by the end of the year.

Pearson invested a record £335m last year as it took advantage of the poor economic climate, which weighed hard on its rivals.

Pearson said its North American education publishing arm, which is the company’s biggest business with annual sales of £2.5bn, enjoyed strong growth during the year.

That helped it overcome tougher conditions for FT Group and Penguin, where profits fell by 4% to £187m and 10% to £84m respectively.

The group said advertising remained were “highly unpredictable” but that it expected to see some stabilisation at its FT Publishing division after the sharp declines across the industry in 2009.

Advertising revenue from the FT newspaper and the company’s 50% in the Economist magazine, now account for less than 3% of Pearson’s total turnover.

Pearson’s 2009 earnings were also boosted by the strength of the US dollar against the British pound as the group generates 60% of its sales in dollars.

Rick Ware Racing Rookie Driver Prepares to Take Atlanta 200 in his Fuel Doctor #47 Truck

ATLANTA, GA – March 1^st, 2010 – After an impressive race at Daytona in The NextEra Energy Resources 250 in his Fuel Doctor #47 truck, Brett Butler has undeniably hit his stride in the racing world.  Now Butler heads home to Atlanta and prepares to go up against champions like Ted Musgrave, Kyle Busch and Mike Skinner in the Atlanta 200 on March 6^th, 2010.

Butler is excited to be in his hometown but continues to stay focused on the race ahead, of his strategy to winning the upcoming Atlanta 200 he says “Flying under the radar has always been my style.”  With the lead in the ‘Rookie of the Year’ points, Butler is ecstatic to be in Atlanta but acknowledges fellow “Rookie of the Year” contender and Bass Pro Shops driver Austin Dillion.  This race is a big one for both Brett Butler and Bass Pro Shops as both consider Atlanta their hometown.  “This is his sponsor’s backyard as well, you know” stated Butler.  “It is nice to not have all the pressure that he must have, the high profile sponsor and paint scheme, not to mention the name and number everyone expects to be at the front” he continued.

Butler will be racing in The Fuel Doctor’s ‘Green Machine’ again after his solid performance at Daytona, “This is a great truck we are taking to Atlanta.  I raced this same truck at Homestead in my debut for Rick Ware Racing and Fuel Doctor USA in 2009” said Butler.  “The Earnhardt-Childress Engine is extremely stout and that’s what you need here and with my crew chief Gary Cogswell and the ‘Green Team’ setting up and tweaking this hot rod, I feel a happy homecoming could be in order” Butler continued with a big grin.

Placing 11^th in the season opener at Daytona and honored with the Raybestos “Rookie of the Race” award, on-lookers were in awe of Butler’s level of skill for his first time on a superspeedway in the Nextera Energy Resources 250 at Daytona.  A part of the Rick Ware Racing team, Brett drove in his ‘Fuel Doctor: Go Green Machine” in a race that marked his career high in NASCAR. “I feel really great about our performance at Daytona, and to now race at Atlanta, my home track, I think we can back that up” stated Butler.  “I know my fellow rookie competitors, Austin (Dillon), Justin (Lofton) and Jennifer (Jo Cobb) will be on the attack after the bad luck that hit them at Daytona” Butler predicted.  “But our Fuel Doctor USA team is up for the challenge” he continued.

Born and raised in Snellville, Georgia, Butler has been racing since the age of fifteen and has worked his way from go-carts to NASCAR’s Camping World Truck Series in less than ten years.  Last year, Butler raced in the ARCA series at Daytona placing 39th.   The younger brother of Ken Butler III, Butler has often been over looked by NASCAR fans, but is quickly making a name for himself  as he sets his sights on conquering NASCAR’s Camping World Truck Series 2010 season.  Bulter enjoys flying under the radar, “I’m not a household name, Fuel Doctor USA and the #47 don’t have the historic background and it’s not what we’re about either” he explained.  “We are here to race hard and educate fans and consumers about saving fuel, money and the environment.  That’s just as important to many during this economy and in this environmentally conscious generation, and if we can run at the front again, well that’s a homecoming gift I will cherish for a very long time.”

Just embarking on his NASCAR journey, Butler is prepared for the hectic schedule and traveling for nearly 30 weeks a year, explaining that “It’s always good to race in your own backyard. To eat dinner at your own house and sleep in your own bed is something that most NASCAR drivers and team members never get a chance to do.”  Butler plans to take full advantage of spending quality time with his family and team in Atlanta before he goes back on the road and heads to Martinsville.

Currently Brett is leading in points for this year’s Rookie of the Year championship. In his first year in the 2010 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, Butler is scheduled for 12 races. Outgoing president Michelle Bachelet has requested mobile bridges, field hospitals, satellite phones, electrical generators, disaster assessment and co-ordination teams, water purification systems and field kitchens, UN officials say.

Some two million Chileans are estimated to have been affected by Saturday’s massive tremor and the tsunamis that followed.

The quake, the most powerful to hit the nation in 50 years, sent shockwaves out from the epicentre 70 miles from Chile’s second city, Concepcion.

Buildings and roads collapsed and 500,000 homes have been left severely damaged.

Six aid workers died when a plane carrying them to Concepcion crashed.

The team was on its way to help organise accommodation for those left homeless by the disaster.
